The lower city is a dark and dirty place, illuminated mostly by underpowered streetlamps, only on occasion will the inhabitants see the sun forcing its way past the skyscrapers, the SkyRails and the elevated Highways. The massive steel supports which hold up the elevated Highways and SkyRails are found scattered throughout the Lower City in an almost rhythmic pattern. The popular drug Maohee can be found with relative ease, as well as other illegal vices. Since the areas are rarely patrolled by the police, crime is rampant.
What do the people in the Upper City think of this? it just solidifies their position that they are better than those below.
The inhabitants of the Lower City consist of those who are not privileged enough to live in the Upper City (though many work there) but are not unfortunate enough to have been placed into the Workers City as well as criminals & escaped workers.
The boundaries of the Lower city varies from location to location within the city, but suffice it to say, anything below the lowest rails and/or elevated parkways is considered the lower city.
Far below the towering structures and elevated roadways of METROPOLIS stands a unique structure, one that those less fortunate rely upon for help, compfort and inspiration. Built sometime in the 15th Century, the Cathedral was the cornerstone for the original city that METROPOLIS was eventually build over. In time a young priest by the name of Desertus was appointed to lead the church. Joh Fredersen threatened to tear it down. But he did not care to fight with opponents to whom he rendered a service by destroying them for their belief. He would wait for their time to come.
Being a major center of worship for the lower city dwellers, the Cathedral is usually full of worshipers and those seeking refuge at all hours of the day. To some it is the only place where they feel wanted.
The church itself is an amazing work of art, with it's gothic architecture, large stone spires, detailed masonry work, ornate stained glass and it's beautifully sculpted gargoyles. Inside, as a reminder to the congregation, stood a sculpture of Death, scythe in hand, and on either side of him was the seven deadly sins. Many secret passages can be found throughout the Cathedral, one in particular descends down into the Catacombs.
Another ancient structure that was around before the foundations of METROPOLIS were laid is the house that Rotwang now resides in. The house has many tales surrounding is origins, the most prevalent one is that it once belonged to a wizard with red shoes. There may be some truth to such rumors as a copper-red pentagram can be found on every door within.
It is within these walls that Rotwang designed, developed and built Futura. The laboratory where she was built takes up the entire basement area of the house. Every possible scientific and electronic tool available can be found littered on his work benches.
Also found inside the walls of this mysterious structure is a maze of corridors and rooms and like the Cathedral there is a passage to the Catacombs here as well.
