Life on Con-Am 27

"I work them hard, I let them play hard...My hookers are clean and good-looking and don't cheat their tricks. My booze isn't watered, my dancers are the most attractive and enthusiastic, and I see to it that video and music for the locker room players are changed every damn shuttle flight" -- Mark B. Sheppard

Worker's Dorms:
Stacked four tall and many rows deep the miners bunks aren't much to look at, but they are comfortable, there is built in storage  at the foot and the head of the bed, and a privacy bunk shield that can be pulled over the open end of the bunk. Some of the miners use magnets to attach things to the remaining walls of their bunk. Those that have served several tours, the "Jove Jockeys", get first pick of the bunks, usually the ones in the back of the room on top.

For entertainment, communal banks of video monitors were set up at the end of each row of bunks. each one had access to 123 entertainment channels ranging from classical music & sports to news & porn as well as everything in between.

The Club:
Always busy, the club is the place where administrators and workers alike could unwind and try and enjoy themselves. dancers, male and female, perform above the crowd in transparent tubes. Prostitutes, tested for STDs by the company, mingle about the workers. gambling tables are set up around the parameter, and the bar always has a crowd around it ordering drinks.

The Cafeteria:
Another busy location within Con-Am 27 is the Cafeteria, its steel and plastic decor illuminated by harsh florescent lighting is filled with workers, some getting off a shift, some ready to proceed with theirs. they line up pushing their trays along the long counter being served unimaginative slop. luckily there are spices available to enhance the flavor into something a little more palatable. within these walls the conversation is loud and boisterous, miners telling off-colored jokes, trying to find some amusement to keep the time moving.

The Mines:
The mines are the reason everyone is here, the Ilmenite ore that is retrieved from within the surface is sent back to earth to produce titanium. Every miner works a 6 hour shift a day and literally live within their spacesuit for that time. Eating and drinking, when necessary, from a tube inside the helmet. Each worker is attached to their work area by a safety tether, jump to far up and Io's gravity will let go, and Jupiter's will take over. There are 8 people per crew (as designated by union contract) and each has to watch each other back. Each person working the mines has a specific duty in which they were hired on to do, some are crane operators, some set the charges, but all are important, important enough to pull in 5 times the amount of money they would if closer to home, and for some this is home.

The Greenhouse:
under carefully controlled florescent tubing a large selection of fruit bearing plants are grown, rich waters flow around the root systems to maintain a constant flow of nutrients. the air in the greenhouse is the sweetest one will find on Io. and the vegetation is used to supplement the weekly shipment of food brought in by the shuttle. All of the lighting and feeding of the plant life is controlled by an Automatic, no human intervention is needed.

The Jail:
Workers that play a little to rough may find themselves in a zero-gee containment which are unpressurized  cells with individual airlocks. The inhabitants are placed in a special suit that has no air tank, instead the flow of oxygen is transmitted via a hose that attaches to the wall, food and liquids are provided in like manner.

The People of Con-Am 27

Mark B. Sheppard - Leisure & Administrative
Its hard to classify The Administrative contact on Con-Am 27,  as he is part company man and part fixer. His dealings with the black-market to purchase the drug Polydychloric Euthimal (PDE) have made him a rich man. Productivity of the workers is up over 200% as his bonus checks reflect. For the most part Mark is a calculating individual, he is upset at the loss of a worker due to the side effects of PDE, but only because it is one less worker padding his bonus check.

"Lazarus" as she is commonly called is a shell of her former self, a hard nosed, washed up company doctor. Like a lot of the people on this post she was getting as far away from her problems as she can. Her primary job is to dispense the drugs that keep the workers productive.

William .T. O'Niel - Security, Federal Marshal
O'Niel is a good cop and he wants to prove it to himself, unfortunately he has the reputation of being someone who doesn't know when to keep his mouth shut. His wife is on the verge of leaving him because even though "this job" will be his "last", it doesn't end up that way.

They follow Sheppard's orders and don't rock the boat, the sooner they finish their tour, the sooner they get home.

Polydychloric Euthimal (PDE)

A synthetic amphetamine developed by the Army, makes you want to "work like a horse" the effects allow a worker to generate fourteen hours worth of
work in a six hour shift for about 10-11 months, then the brain snaps.

Mark Sheppard likes the increased output, it increased the bonus check. Con-Am 27 has the highest output of all the Con-Am stations.

Prior to the drugs arrival there were two deaths in a six month period, the
following six months registered 24 deaths and the last six 28.

Federal Marshals

On Jupiter's moon he's the only law.

On all Con-Am operations, there is one marshal, and some company men to assist him.

Like the miners, Federal Marshals are assigned in one year tours of duty, and like the miners they are paid very well. but just because you are paid well doesn't mean the Agency is impressed with your work. the further out you go the more questionable your work record is and you can't go any further out than on Io. There are exceptions however, some people are just crazy enough to want this job...

Each Marshal has the full backing of the Law behind them, however the further out you are, the less likely you will receive any back-up, until its to late.

The Marshals on the Con-Am mines live in their own private quarters, with their families.

Enclosed Combat Riot Gun

A shot barreled slug thrower designed specifically for use inside of places where the protective skin of an area must not be penetrated, this applies to aircraft, space craft, space stations and space colonies.

The gun itself looks like a sawed off shotgun with a "short sight". There is an adjustable counterweight built into the bottom to balance out the firearm as the user wishes.

The shells and clips are made of plastic and designed to deliver maximum stopping power at short range, the dial on the side of the gun modifies the solid shaped charge of propellant within each shell.
