Metropolis in the year 2026 is a cold, mechanical, industrial city that is home to approx. 30,000,000 people, consisting of three main castes, the elite class, the "service" class and the workers. The city itself consists of four levels:
Upper Levels: This area is accessed by walk tubes, skyrails, and personal
airships. This is where the elite live and play. Expensive entertainment abounds
and crime is low, thanks to the rigid patrolling of the corporate security set
up by Joh Fredersen.
Lower Levels: This part of the city are where the managers and their
families live. This area is dark from the shadows cast by the vaulting
skyscrapers. the area is also dirty and crime is high with a lot of illicit
activities taking place on a daily basis. On the positive side, there is retail
activity going on here as well. (With a percentage of profits and rent going to
the Elite owners of the buildings)
Underground: Below the surface of the earth are the power generators and
the workers city. The workers city itself is dirty, and poorly lit from the
artificial lighting lingering above. Crime is not as prevalent down here as it
is in the Lower Levels of the city, but
vigilante justice is the rule of law.
The Catacombs: The ruins of a 2000 year old city that stood here
before, it is a popular hideout for runaway workers and criminals.
We are never really told where Metropolis is located, the film was done by an Austrian in Germany, who was inspired by the skyline of New York City. What we do know is that it sits on (or near) a large body of water and that an underground river was diverted to build the worker's city.
